I can help if…

These are the situations people bring to me most often, described the way they feel day to day.

Mood and anxiety

You have felt flat for weeks, you sleep badly, or worry runs on a loop and you have started avoiding certain situations.

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Trauma

Body, eating and performance

Food or your body takes up too much room in your head, a habit has got away from you, or you want to hold up under competition pressure without it getting the better of you.

  • Eating behaviour and body image
  • Addictions: alcohol, drugs, gambling and betting, food, cigarettes
  • Sports performance

Relationships and self-esteem

You doubt yourself to the point of staying quiet or giving up, or the same arguments keep coming back in your relationship and you no longer know how to get out of them.

  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Relationships and couples

For couple work, I see both partners together, never one partner alone.

This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure whether what you are going through is something I work with, call me and we can talk it through.

How I work

I work with cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT. We start from the here and now: the concrete situations that get in your way day to day, what goes through your mind at that moment and what you do to cope.

Between sessions you leave with tools and exercises to try. A large part of the work is spotting the thoughts that keep you stuck and looking at them from another angle, which is what cognitive restructuring means. It is also learning to let go of what is out of your hands.

Therapeutic hypnosis and EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) are tools I use, if it suits you, within that psychological work. We talk about it beforehand, and nothing happens without your agreement.

My aim is for you to leave each session with something concrete to put into practice, and for those tools to keep serving you long after our appointments.

What happens in a first session?

You call or email me. We set a first appointment and I answer your practical questions.

The first session lasts about 90 minutes. You tell me what brings you here, your history and what you would like to see change. From that we set goals together.

After that we choose a rhythm that works for you. The number of sessions varies from one person to another, and we take stock regularly.

What you say in session is covered by professional secrecy (secret professionnel), within the limits set by Belgian law.

About me

I am American. I hold a Master of Arts from New York University (NYU, 1992) and a DESS in psychology (diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées) from Université Lille III, awarded in 1993.

I specialised in cognitive behavioural therapy, then trained in therapeutic hypnosis at L’Espace du Possible (Chercq) and, over the same period, in EMDR. I also call myself a hypnotherapist: it is the name I give to that practice, which remains part of my work as a psychologist.

I see people in English and in French. If you live around Tournai, Lille or Mons and English is your language, that means therapy in your own words, with no need to translate what you feel.

I have a fascination for the human mind and our thought processes: how they impact our lives, behaviours, relationships with ourselves and others.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral or a prescription?

No. In Belgium you can see a psychologist directly, without a prescription or a referral from a doctor.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies from one person to another and depends on what you want to change. We decide together and take stock along the way.

Will I lose control under hypnosis?

No. Under hypnosis you stay conscious and you can stop at any time. I explain each step before we begin.

Can sessions be entirely in English?

Yes. I am American, and I see people in English just as readily as in French.

Can I come with my teenager?

Yes. I see teenagers from the age of 12, and a parent is present at the first appointment.

What your teenager tells me stays confidential, with one exception: suicidal thoughts.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What is said in session is covered by professional secrecy, within the limits set by Belgian law.
